Nahyun Hwang is a registered architect, and with David Eugin Moon, a partner of N H D M Architecture Urbanism, a NY based collaborative practice for design and research. The firm’s work has been recognized and presented globally through AIANY Design Honor awards, the I.D. Annual Design Review Design Distinction, the 5th and 6th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, and the 14th Venice Biennale, among others.
Until founding N H D M in 2010, Hwang practiced as a Senior Associate at James Corner Field Operations, and played a critical role in the design and implementation of the firm’s High Line project as the Lead Designer (2004-2006) and Lead Project Designer (2007-2010), heading a multidisciplinary design team of architects, landscape architects, and others. She was also a Project Designer for the architectural elements for the firm’s 2,200 acre public park Fresh Kills, the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras Campus Master Plan, and the proposal for the Taichung Contemporary Music Center in Taiwan. Prior to Field Operations, she practiced at Stan Allen Architects;Herzog & de Meuron; OMA; and the studio of Rafael Moneo, contributing to a wide range of built and speculative projects, including the Walker Art Center expansion in Minneapolis, MN; "La Reserva" housing prototypes in Santiago, Chile; Dee and Charles Wyly Theater, Dallas, TX; and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles, CA.
Hwang holds a Master's degree in Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University (2001), and a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea (1995). She currently teaches at Columbia University, and Hwang's current research focuses on topics in alternative renewal paradigms for post-industrial and post-developmental cities. Hwang is a recipient of 2016 New York State Council of Art Independent Projects Grant.
